What is Meditation

What is Meditation

What is Meditation? Well…Meditation, in its simplest form, is a tool that aids in increasing mental concentration. Meditation, called Dhyana in Sanskrit, has been used in India for several thousand years. The ascetics and Yogis of India spent hundreds of years developing various meditation techniques. The Hindu sage Patanjali mastered the secrets of the human mind and wrote exhaustively about various meditation techniques in his famous book Yoga Sutras or the Aphorisms on Yoga.

Meditation is a state of intense concentration that needs some practice to master the technique. A simple analogy would be that of an un-flickering candle flame burning steadily in a windless place. In this analogy the flame is the mind. The wind represents the disturbances. The mind, when free from unnecessary thoughts and disturbances, focused to its object of thought for a prolonged period of time, is called meditation.

Traditionally, the ultimate objective of meditation has been God realization. However, based on my personal experiences, I would like to point out here that the practice of meditation can benefit anyone and everyone, irrespective of one’s religious beliefs and faith. Infact, you do not even need to believe in any physical form of God in order to enjoy the complete benefits of meditation.

In its simplest form, this is “what is meditation”!!

Also, I would like to share this small animated video on the history of meditation here :-). It is called “Then and Now”.
